As the owner of a dog, you will no doubt be aware of the number of options for dog beds on the market.  If we forget for a moment the size, shape and colour, the material used in manufacture of dog beds basically comes down to Plastic or wood.  More recently, however, Wooden dog beds are becoming a lot more popular with pet owners due to their natural, aesthetic and durable properties.  In this blog we will explore the benefits of having a wooden dog bed.

Durability

One of the most obvious advantages of a well-made wooden bed is durability.  Wooden beds should last for years, with a little maintenance, especially those built with traditional carpentry methods. Wood can withstand knocks and bumps and actually look the better for it, giving a worn and weathered look.  Plastic beds can and do shatter with normal use, it can degrade or colours fade as it becomes older or left in direct sunlight.

Heath benefits

Another benefit of wooden dog beds is their potential health benefits, Plastics or synthetic materials contain chemicals to help with strength and to withstand fading colour in sunlight.  Wood is natural, non-toxic and it contain no such harmful chemicals.  A lot of wooden dog beds have a slotted bottom and have an elevated platform which provides much better air flow and circulation, this will help keep everything fresh and dry.  This in turn helps the dog regulate its own body temperature especially important on the hottest of days.  Plastic dog beds tend to stifle and contain the hot damp air.  All of this means Wooden dog beds are a much healthier option for your beloved pet.

Eco-Friendly

Wooden dog beds are especially Eco-friendly and have a number of advantages over their plastic counterparts.  Due to their durability, as previously discussed, a wooden dog bed will last much longer than the plastic variety, a dog owner may purchase several plastic dog beds in the corresponding lifetime of a wooden dog bed.  Think of all that plastic going to landfill, or at best being processed into more dog beds, put back into the commercial cycle, with all the associated transportation and packaging!  A wooden bed Should, if maintained outlast the life of dog and possibly the owner!  Wood is a renewable resource, it can be replenished and used sustainably.  And at the very end of its usefulness and utility, a wooden dog bed is fully recyclable, therefore reducing its lifetime environmental impact.

Aesthetics

A well designed, well-constructed beguiling dog bed made of eye pleasing wood can only add to your home.  Imagine looking across to your family pet, at peace, and very much in its place surrounded by a handsome or charming wooden bed.  The styles of wooden beds available are almost limitless and can match any decoration style.  Modern or traditional, over the top or minimalist, there’ll be a well-made wooden dog bed for you out there.  Now compare that in your mind to a plastic garishly coloured plastic tub, it’s definitely not beautiful.  No comparison can be gleaned.  Of all reasons to buy a wooden dog bed over a plastic dog bed, how an item looks, is in my mind the starkest reason.

Conclusion

On every count a Plastic dog bed is inferior to its wooden counterpart, its only advantage is its cheapness.  A tradesman making a wooden bed will have touched every piece of wood many times during the construction, cutting each component to size, sanding it, assembling it and finally waxing it to an alluring sheen.  A plastic dog bed on the other hand will be, mass produced, injection moulded, made for the lowest cost and containing no real human interaction before served up in stacks at the local pet shop chain. Yes, most are designed to be stackable to save on expensive commercial floor space!  So then, I started this blog to talk about comparisons, but there’s no comparison at all, go for wood every time. Nature over process.
